Who is Stuart McKeown?

Total MCMost of you know me as Stuart, or at least The Gyppo if you live in Melbourne. The reason for that nickname although somewhat apparrant I’ll maybe leave until a more appropiate time to tell you.

I was living in Melbourne there for a year and I wish I had started this website there, I’d have a hell of a lot more interesting stories to write about than at the moment :p I’ve missed a hell of a lot of decent parties already since I got home, Richie Hawtin & Magda, Damian Lazarus, Mathew Jonson & Lee Burridge. ARRRRGGGHHHHH

I guess you could say that Melbourne had a profound infulence on my DJing style as well as where I wanted to start with my Production. When I originally arrived I’d been a member of the Progressive Breaks community for some time and you could say that was my favourite musical genre. Although, as much as I enjoyed playing it and listening to it there was just never enough good tunes to play it and really destroy a Dancefloor.

If anything I thought the move to Melbourne would have brought me closer to that sound, it being the home of some awesome breaks producers. I guess you could say things started changing when I started going to more and more parties, and when I say more I mean at least two every weekend (Yes Darius, proper MC style). I started getting more of a feel for what really moved the dancefloors. Some of the best gigs we went to over the course of the year were:

Michael Mayer (Love is Stronger than Pride mmmm)
Phil K (Smashed it numerous times)
Gab Oliver
Gavin Keitel (Probably one of the most Consistent DJs in Melbourne)
Rollin Connection (Darius & Banko who run Darkbeat)
Dean Millson (Dean runs Private Function)
Superpitcher
James Holden
James Zabiela vs Phil K

No Electro HereThings went a lot more crazy music wise, especially once I started producing aswell. I’d almost try and make the most crazy tune I could. Just to see if it could mess with peoples heads. Nothing better than dancing in a Club, enjoying the music but having it play tricks on you too?

We had to keep it real, none of this Electro Bullshit that was taking over the world. You will notice Darius Bassiray on the left being a total MC.
